Square AI — AI automation for Australian small business
AI for Plumbers · Emergency Triage · Live in 14 Days

AI that answers the 3am burst pipe call.

Plumbing demand does not keep business hours. A hot water system dies on a Sunday, a pipe goes at midnight, and the person calling has water coming through their ceiling right now. They will ring three plumbers. The one who answers gets the job. From $2,500 setup + $349/month.

The short answer

An AI receptionist for an Australian plumbing business costs about $2,500 to set up and $349 a month with Square AI, or roughly $99 to $1,299 a month across the wider market. It answers every call, works out whether it is an emergency, and books the job into ServiceM8, Tradify or Simpro.

Plumbers charge $80 to $200 an hour in standard hours across Australia (Sydney typically $120–$160), with call-out fees of $60 to $180 and after-hours work at 1.5 to 2 times the standard rate, based on Australian cost guides compiled in 2026. One recovered after-hours callout most months covers the retainer.

The plumbing problem is the hours, not the phone

Plumbing is an emergency trade with a domestic customer base, and that combination creates a specific, expensive gap. The calls that are worth the most arrive when you are least able to answer them. Someone notices water staining the ceiling at 9pm. A hot water system fails on Saturday morning. A drain backs up on a public holiday. These are not price-shopping enquiries — they are people with an active problem who will pay whatever the after-hours rate is, and they are ringing the next number on the list within about a minute of hitting voicemail.

The rates make the arithmetic uncomfortable. Australian cost guides put plumber hourly rates at $80 to $200 in standard hours, with Sydney commonly $120–$160, plus a call-out fee somewhere between $60 and $180. After-hours, weekend and public holiday work typically runs at 1.5 to 2 times the standard rate, and emergency call-out fees alone can reach $150–$400. So the calls arriving when you are asleep are, on average, the most valuable calls you get. These are compiled figures from cost-guide publishers rather than official statistics, so treat them as the going market range rather than gospel — but they are consistent across a lot of independent sources.

Meanwhile the ABS recorded 76,414 new construction businesses in 2024–25, more than any other industry. More plumbers, same number of burst pipes. The person who answers first is increasingly the person who gets paid, and the National AI Centre's survey has construction sitting below 30% AI adoption — the lowest of any sector tracked. Which is either a problem or the opening, depending on how fast you move.

How It Handles Calls

Emergency triage is the whole job

An AI receptionist for a plumber lives or dies on one question: can it tell a burst pipe from a dripping tap? We configure the triage first, before anything else, because everything downstream depends on it.

Straight through to you

Burst pipe. Water through the ceiling. Gas smell. Sewage backflow. No water to the property. Hot water failure in winter with elderly or infants in the house. The agent stops qualifying and puts the caller through to you or your on-call number immediately. You set the list.

Booked for the next slot

Dripping tap. Running toilet. Low pressure with supply still on. Slow drain. Quote for a bathroom reno. The agent captures the details, checks your real availability and travel time, books it, and writes the job card. You find out when you read the SMS.

Captured and flagged

The ambiguous ones. Someone who cannot describe what is happening, an unusual job, a strata query. The agent gathers name, address, photos where possible and what they can describe, then flags it for you to call back with the whole picture already in front of you.

The Maths

Priced against real plumbing jobs

Here is what the market says common jobs cost, and what a single recovered one covers. These are labour ranges from Australian cost guides — your own numbers are the ones that matter.

JobTypical market rangeJobs to cover a year of Square AI
Emergency call-out (after hours)$150–$400 call-out + 1.5–2× hourlyJust over one, most months
Blocked drain clearing$150–$800One to three
Hot water system replacement$1,000–$5,000Less than one
Leaking tap / toilet repair$80–$250Three to five
Standard call-out + first hour$140–$380Two to three
Bathroom rough-in / renovation$2,000–$10,000+Well under one

Job value ranges compiled from Australian plumbing cost guides published in 2026. These are market compilations from cost-guide publishers, not official statistics, and they vary considerably by city, access and scope. "Jobs to cover a year of Square AI" is our arithmetic against $6,688 (year one: $2,500 setup + $349×12) using the midpoint of each range.

Wired into the software you already run

ServiceM8 is where most Australian plumbing businesses under about fifteen staff end up, and for good reason — it is Australian-built, it prices per job tier rather than per user, and the mobile app suits the way plumbers actually work. It is iOS-first and the Android app is noticeably weaker, which matters if your crew is on Androids. Tradify (from about $35/mo per user) is the other common landing spot, with better Android support. Bigger operations with asset and maintenance contracts run AroFlo or Simpro. Fergus, built by a New Zealand plumber, has the best job costing of the lot.

We integrate with all of them, plus Xero and MYOB for invoicing. The point is that a call at 2am becomes a real job card in the system you open at 6am — not a notification you have to re-type while you are eating breakfast.

Timeline

Fourteen days, start to answering

1

Days 1–5 · Discovery

Your services, your suburbs, your rates, your fixed prices, your after-hours policy, your escalation rules. We listen to how you actually talk to customers, because that is what it has to sound like.

2

Days 6–11 · Build and test

Built, integrated with your job software, calendar connected. You ring it on a private number and throw your worst callers at it. Anything that sounds wrong gets fixed before it goes anywhere near a customer.

Days 12–14 · Live

Final tweaks, a 30-minute session so you can change things yourself, then live on your real number. First month we go through real transcripts together and tune.

FAQ

Plumber questions

You tell it. During discovery we build your emergency keyword list — burst, flooding, no water, gas, sewage, water through the ceiling, hot water in winter — and the escalation rule for each. The agent listens for those and stops qualifying the moment it hears one, transferring straight to you or your on-call number. Then we test it against real scenarios before it ever touches your business line.

$2,500 setup plus $349 a month with Square AI. Across the market, self-serve platforms advertise from about $99–$149/mo and managed services reach roughly $1,299/mo. With emergency call-outs at $150–$400 plus after-hours rates of 1.5–2× standard, most plumbers recover the monthly retainer on one after-hours job.

Yes — ServiceM8 is the platform we integrate with most for plumbers, and the AI writes a proper job card with the caller's details, the problem description and the booked time. Also Tradify, AroFlo, Simpro, Ascora and Fergus, plus Xero and MYOB. Worth knowing: ServiceM8's Android app is genuinely weaker than its iOS one, so if your crew is on Android, Tradify may suit you better regardless of what we build.

It can give your standard call-out fee and hourly rate, and any fixed prices you have set for defined jobs like a tap washer or a toilet install. It will not invent a price for a job it has not seen, because the honest answer to "how much to fix my leak" is usually "depends what is behind the wall". It says that, then books the inspection.

Only for what you decide is worth waking up for. Most plumbers run it so genuine emergencies ring through and everything else gets booked for the morning without disturbing anyone. Some run a hard cut-off after 10pm where even emergencies are captured and texted rather than transferred. Your rules, and you can change them yourself.

Some will, and it is worth being straight about that. The ones who mind most are usually long-term customers who expect you personally — and for those, the agent can recognise the number and route straight to you. Emergency callers at midnight overwhelmingly prefer a machine that answers to a voicemail that does not. The agent says it is an AI up front, because being caught pretending is much worse than being a robot.

It is actually the opposite — the ABS counted about 1.74 million Australian businesses with no employees, and you are the case with the biggest gap, because there is literally nobody else to pick up. That said, if your work comes from repeat customers and referrals rather than the phone, be honest with yourself and skip it. Run the calculator on the receptionist page first.

Fourteen days. Week one is discovery — your services, your suburbs, your after-hours policy, your emergency keywords, your rates. Week two is build and testing: you ring it yourself and throw your worst callers at it. Day 14 it goes live on your real number, and we review transcripts with you through the first month.
